Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Ventura Wellness Behavioral Health offers PTSD treatment in Thousand Oaks for adults whose lives are still being shaped by something that happened to them. Our trauma-informed outpatient programs use EMDR, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychiatric care to quiet flashbacks, improve sleep, and help you feel safe in your own life again — in person, online, or both.

PTSD Treatment in Thousand Oaks, CA

Post-traumatic stress disorder can follow a single event, like a car crash, an assault, or a fire, or it can build after repeated exposure, as many first responders, veterans, and healthcare workers know. It isn’t a sign of weakness. Your brain learned to treat danger as ongoing, and it keeps sounding the alarm long after the threat has passed.

That alarm doesn’t switch off on its own for everyone. Months or years later, people describe being “fine” until a smell, a sound, or a date brings it all back. Treatment helps your nervous system file the memory as something that happened then, not something happening now. If your trauma stretches back to childhood or involved years of harm, our page on complex trauma treatment explains how we adapt the work.

Signs and Symptoms of PTSD

PTSD symptoms usually fall into four groups. You don’t need all of them for treatment to help.

  • Re-experiencing: intrusive memories, nightmares, or flashbacks that feel like the event is happening again
  • Avoidance: staying away from places, people, or conversations that remind you of what happened
  • Changes in mood and thinking: guilt, shame, numbness, or a belief that the world and other people can’t be trusted
  • Feeling on edge: jumpiness, irritability, trouble sleeping or concentrating, always scanning for danger

PTSD rarely travels alone. Depression, anxiety, and heavy drinking or drug use are common companions, often because they started as ways to cope. We look at the whole picture, including depression and anxiety, rather than treating trauma in isolation. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Center for PTSD is a reliable source for more background, whether or not you’ve served.

If trauma has left you thinking about ending your life, call or text 988 or call 911 now. We are an outpatient program, not an emergency service.

Evidence-Based Therapies for Trauma

Trauma work goes at a pace you can handle. Before anyone asks you to revisit painful memories, you’ll learn ways to calm your body and ground yourself, so the process feels manageable rather than retraumatizing.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing uses guided bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements, while you briefly hold a memory in mind. Many people find the memory loses its emotional charge over a series of sessions, without having to describe every detail out loud.

Trauma-focused CBT and DBT skills

Cognitive behavioral therapy helps you challenge beliefs that trauma left behind, like “it was my fault” or “I’m never safe.” DBT skills give you tools for intense emotion and distress. Both are part of our behavioral therapies.

Individual and group support

Your individual therapy sessions are where most trauma processing happens. Group therapy focuses on skills and connection, not retelling stories, and it can ease the isolation that PTSD often brings. Acceptance and commitment therapy helps you move toward what matters even while some symptoms remain.

Medication and body-based care

Some clients benefit from medication for sleep, nightmares, depression, or anxiety. Our psychiatric team reviews options with you through medication management. Yoga, breathwork, and acupuncture are offered too, because trauma lives in the body as well as the mind.

Choosing the Right Level of Care for PTSD

Our partial hospitalization program offers about six hours of structured care a day, a good fit when symptoms are disrupting sleep, work, and relationships. The intensive outpatient program runs about three hours a day, several days a week, for people who need real support but can keep up with daily responsibilities.

For many trauma survivors, leaving the house is part of the struggle. Our virtual PHP and IOP lets California residents attend from home, and you can switch to in-person days at our Thousand Oaks office when you’re ready. With morning, afternoon, and evening tracks, clients from Camarillo, Newbury Park, and across Ventura County can fit care around work or family.

Your First Week at Ventura Wellness Behavioral Health

You’ll start with an assessment and meet your dedicated therapist, case manager, and psychiatric team. Within three days, you and your therapist will have a written plan that sets the pace and focus of your trauma work. A psychiatric appointment happens in your first week, and the plan is reviewed weekly. You don’t need a substance use diagnosis to join. If alcohol or drugs have become part of how you cope, our dual diagnosis program treats both together.

We’re in network with many major insurers, including Aetna, Cigna, Blue Shield of California, Tricare, and TriWest, and our team will check your benefits for free. Learn more about admissions.

PTSD Treatment FAQs

Will I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

Not right away, and not in group. You set the pace with your therapist. Early sessions focus on safety and coping skills. Some approaches, like EMDR, don’t require you to describe the event in full detail. Trauma processing happens in individual sessions, and you can pause if it becomes too much.

Can PTSD be treated years after the event?

Yes. Many people come to us ten or twenty years after a trauma, often when a new stressor stirs old symptoms. The brain can still learn that the danger is over. Treatment that starts later can still reduce flashbacks, improve sleep, and make daily life feel more manageable.

Do you treat veterans and first responders?

Yes. We work with veterans, active-duty families, firefighters, police officers, and healthcare workers. We’re in network with Tricare and TriWest, among other plans. Our clinicians understand that service-related trauma often comes with its own culture, stigma, and reluctance to ask for help.

Is virtual PTSD treatment effective?

For many people, yes. Research supports telehealth delivery of trauma therapies such as CBT, and some clients feel safer working from home. Your therapist will help you set up a private space and a grounding plan for after sessions. If in-person care would serve you better, you can move to our Thousand Oaks office.

What happened to you is part of your story, but it doesn’t have to run your life. Call 805-905-5483 to speak with our admissions team, or verify your insurance to see your coverage.
