Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive Outpatient Program

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) in Thousand Oaks offers real, structured treatment for mental health and substance use while you keep your job, classes and family life going. IOP runs about three hours a day, several days a week, in the morning, afternoon or evening. You get far more support than a weekly therapy appointment, without stepping away from your life to get it.

Some people start with us in IOP. Others move into it after our partial hospitalization program or a residential stay, once they need a little less structure but still want regular, focused care. IOP is often where the work of recovery starts to show up in everyday life.

How Our Intensive Outpatient Program Works

Each IOP session lasts about three hours. Most of that time is spent in small therapy groups led by licensed clinicians, and you also meet one-on-one with your own therapist during the week. Sessions follow a steady format: a check-in on how the past day went, a skills-focused group, then a process group where you apply what you’re learning to your own situation.

Between sessions, you go back to your normal routine and test new skills in the real world. Then you bring what happened back to group the next time. That loop of practice, reflection and adjustment is what makes IOP work.

Is IOP Right for You?

An intensive outpatient program tends to be the right level of care if you:

  • Have symptoms that weekly therapy isn’t keeping in check, but you can still manage day-to-day safely
  • Are stepping down from PHP, residential treatment or a hospital stay
  • Want to cut back or stop drinking or using and need consistent accountability
  • Need to keep working, studying or caring for kids during treatment
  • Have a stable place to live and some support at home

If your symptoms are more severe, or you’re having a hard time functioning day to day, our team may recommend starting in PHP and moving to IOP later. We’ll explain our reasoning either way. If you’re in crisis right now, call or text 988 or call 911.

What You’ll Work On in IOP

IOP treatment at Ventura Wellness Behavioral Health draws on evidence-based approaches, chosen for what you’re dealing with rather than applied to everyone the same way:

  • CBT and DBT to spot unhelpful thought patterns, manage intense emotions and tolerate distress without making things worse
  • EMDR and trauma-informed care for people whose symptoms are rooted in past experiences
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to move toward what matters to you, even when hard feelings show up
  • Relapse prevention planning for alcohol and drug use
  • Group therapy that builds connection and honest feedback

Your psychiatric team handles medication management when it’s part of your plan. Wellness practices like yoga and breathwork round out the week.

Conditions Treated in Our Thousand Oaks IOP

Our IOP supports adults living with anxiety, depression, PTSD and complex trauma, bipolar and other mood disorders, and personality disorders. It also treats alcohol, opioid, stimulant and prescription drug use, plus dual diagnosis, where mental health and substance use overlap. You don’t need a substance use diagnosis to join for mental health care.

Your Team, Your Plan

Every IOP client has a dedicated therapist, a case manager and a psychiatric team. We build your individualized treatment plan within the first three days and review it every week, so your care changes as you do. You’ll have your first psychiatric appointment within your first week.

Your case manager helps with the logistics around treatment: coordinating with your primary doctor, handling work or school letters, and planning aftercare so support doesn’t stop when IOP ends.

Flexible IOP Schedules: Morning, Afternoon and Evening

Treatment works best when you can actually show up. That’s why we run IOP groups in morning, afternoon and evening tracks. Many working professionals in Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village and Camarillo choose evenings; parents often pick mid-morning after school drop-off. You can attend at our Thousand Oaks center, join our virtual IOP from anywhere in California, or combine the two.

Paying for IOP

We’re in network with many major insurance carriers, including Aetna, Cigna, Blue Shield of California, Kaiser, Tricare, TriWest and UnitedHealthcare/Optum. What you’ll pay depends on your plan. Our admissions team runs a free benefits check, usually the same day, and walks you through your costs before you commit. Verify your insurance here, or read about payment options.

Intensive Outpatient Program FAQs

How many hours a week is IOP?

Each IOP day is about three hours of programming, and you attend several days a week. The exact number of days depends on your treatment plan and what your insurance authorizes. Your therapist will explain your schedule at intake and adjust it as you make progress.

How long does an intensive outpatient program last?

It varies. Your length of stay depends on how you respond to treatment, not a calendar. Your team checks your progress every week. When you’re ready, we help you move to standard outpatient therapy with a clear aftercare plan, so you aren’t left without support.

What’s the difference between IOP and PHP?

Intensity. PHP runs about six hours a day for people who need close daily support. IOP runs about three hours a day for people who are stable enough to keep up with work, school or family. Many clients start in PHP and step down to IOP with the same therapist.

Can I do IOP online?

Yes. California residents can attend our virtual IOP by secure video. It follows the same structure as in-person IOP, with the same groups, therapist sessions and psychiatric care. Some clients go hybrid, attending in person on some days and online on others.

Does insurance cover IOP?

Most major insurance plans include some coverage for intensive outpatient treatment, but benefits vary from plan to plan. We’ll check your coverage for free, usually the same day, and explain any copays or deductibles up front so there are no surprises.
