Outpatient Mental Health & Addiction Treatment
in Thousand Oaks, Los Angeles Area, CA
If you are thinking about ending your life right now, or you’re worried you might act on these thoughts, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. The Lifeline is free, confidential, and open 24 hours a day. Ventura Wellness Behavioral Health is an outpatient program and is not an emergency service.
Ventura Wellness Behavioral Health provides suicidal ideation treatment in Thousand Oaks for adults who are living with thoughts of death or suicide and are safe enough to be supported in an outpatient setting. Through safety planning, therapy, and psychiatric care, we help you understand where these thoughts come from, get through the hard moments, and build a life that feels worth staying for.
Suicidal ideation means thinking about death or suicide. For some people it shows up as a passing wish to not wake up. For others, the thoughts are frequent and hard to push away. Either way, these thoughts are a signal of deep pain, not a character flaw, and they are far more common than most people realize. Many people who have them go on to feel better with the right help.
Suicidal thoughts often grow out of conditions that respond to treatment, including depression, bipolar and personality disorders, PTSD, and substance use. Life events, like a breakup, a job loss, or the death of someone close, can make them louder. Our work addresses both the thoughts themselves and what’s underneath them.
Outpatient treatment is a good fit when you’re having suicidal thoughts but you’re not in immediate danger, you can agree to a safety plan, and you have some support at home. Many people in this situation get real relief from a structured day program without needing a hospital stay.
A hospital or inpatient unit is the safer choice if you have a plan and intend to act on it, have recently made an attempt, or can’t stay safe between sessions. That isn’t a failure. It’s the right level of care for that moment. Once things are more stable, our partial hospitalization program is often the next step down, and our team can coordinate that handoff with the hospital.
Not sure which applies to you? Call us. Our admissions team will talk it through and, if outpatient care isn’t safe yet, point you to the right place.
Your first sessions include a thorough risk assessment. Together with your therapist, you’ll write a personal safety plan: your early warning signs, things that help you cope, people you can call, and steps to make your surroundings safer. Your clinicians check in on risk regularly throughout treatment, not just at intake.
DBT and CBT, part of our behavioral therapies, have strong research behind them for reducing suicidal thinking and self-harm. You’ll learn skills for riding out intense emotions without acting on them and for questioning the thought that things will never change. In individual therapy you’ll look at what drives the pain. Group therapy helps cut through the isolation that so often comes with these thoughts.
You’ll see a psychiatric provider during your first week, and medication management continues throughout treatment, especially when depression or bipolar disorder is part of the picture. With your permission, we involve family or close friends so they know your safety plan and how to help.
Most clients with active suicidal thoughts start in our PHP, which offers about six hours of support a day with close clinical contact. As things settle, many step down to the intensive outpatient program, about three hours a day, several days a week. Both are available in person in Thousand Oaks, through online therapy for California residents, or as a hybrid, with morning, afternoon, and evening tracks. That flexibility helps people coming from Moorpark, Agoura Hills, or elsewhere in Ventura County.
Every client has a dedicated therapist, a case manager, and a psychiatric team. Your treatment plan is written within three days and reviewed every week. We’re in network with many major insurers, and our admissions team will check your benefits at no cost.
Asking someone directly whether they’re thinking about suicide doesn’t put the idea in their head. It often brings relief. Listen without arguing, stay with them if you’re worried about their immediate safety, and help them connect with 988 or emergency care. The 988 Lifeline also offers guidance for family and friends. When the immediate crisis has passed, call us to talk about next steps.
Not automatically. Having suicidal thoughts is one of the reasons people come to us, and many are treated safely as outpatients. We recommend a hospital only when someone is in immediate danger. Being honest with your clinicians helps them match you with the right level of care and keep you safe.
A safety plan is a short, written guide you create with your therapist for difficult moments. It lists your personal warning signs, coping strategies, people and places that help, professional contacts including 988, and ways to make your environment safer. You keep it somewhere easy to reach and update it as treatment goes on.
For many people, yes. Treating the underlying depression, trauma, or other condition often reduces suicidal thoughts significantly, and skills learned in therapy make the remaining moments easier to get through. Recovery isn’t always a straight line, which is why your safety plan and support stay in place after the most intense phase ends.
Yes, if you live in California and your clinicians agree it’s safe. Virtual care includes the same therapy, safety planning, and psychiatric support as in-person care. Your team will confirm your location and an emergency contact at each session so they can get you help quickly if needed.
You deserve support, and reaching out is a strong first step. Call 805-905-5483 to talk with our admissions team, or verify your insurance online. If you’re in danger right now, call or text 988 or call 911.
