Online Therapy (Virtual IOP & PHP)
Ventura Wellness Behavioral Health offers online therapy across California through our virtual IOP and PHP programs. You get the same structured treatment we provide at our Thousand Oaks center, including group therapy, one-on-one sessions and psychiatric care, by secure video from home. If driving to treatment every day isn’t realistic, or you’d simply rather heal somewhere familiar, virtual care keeps intensive support within reach.
This isn’t an app or a chat service. It’s a full outpatient program led by licensed clinicians, with a schedule, a treatment plan and a team that knows you by name.
Virtual IOP and PHP in California
We run two levels of online care:
- Virtual PHP: about six hours of programming a day, for people who need close daily support. See how our partial hospitalization program works.
- Virtual IOP: about three hours a day, for people balancing treatment with work, school or family. Learn more about our intensive outpatient program.
Both are open to adults living anywhere in California, from Ventura County and Los Angeles to the Central Valley and the Bay Area. You can also go hybrid: some clients attend in person in Thousand Oaks a few days a week and log in from home on the rest.
What Online Therapy Sessions Include
Online treatment follows the same plan and the same standards as in-person care. During a typical week you’ll have:
- Live therapy groups, with cameras on, in small cohorts led by licensed clinicians
- Individual therapy with your dedicated therapist
- Psychiatric visits and medication management by telemedicine
- Skills-based work drawn from CBT, DBT and ACT
- Check-ins with your case manager about work, school, benefits and aftercare
Your treatment plan is written within your first three days and reviewed every week. You’ll meet your psychiatric provider within your first week, the same timeline as in-person clients.
Telehealth vs. Telemedicine: What’s the Difference?
People use the terms loosely, so here’s how we use them. Telehealth is the umbrella term for any health care delivered remotely, including therapy, groups, case management and education. Telemedicine is the clinical slice of that: a licensed medical provider evaluating you, diagnosing and prescribing over video. Our virtual programs include both. Your groups and therapy are telehealth; your psychiatric appointments are telemedicine. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services keeps a plain-language guide to telehealth for patients if you’d like to know more.
Benefits of Online Mental Health and Addiction Treatment
Virtual care isn’t a lesser version of treatment. For many people, it’s the reason they can get treatment at all. Clients tell us these are the things that matter most:
- No commute. Three to six hours a day of programming is much more doable without an hour in traffic on either end.
- Privacy. No one sees your car in a treatment center parking lot. Sessions run on a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform.
- Consistency. Travel, a sick kid or a rainy day doesn’t have to mean a missed session.
- Practice where it counts. You build coping skills in the same home and routines where you’ll need them.
- Access to specialists. If you live in a rural part of the state, you can still reach an experienced dual diagnosis team.
Who Virtual Treatment Works Best For
Online therapy is a strong fit for adults with depression, anxiety, trauma, mood disorders, and alcohol or drug use who are medically stable and have a private space at home. It suits people with long commutes, parents, people with mobility issues and anyone who has struggled to keep in-person appointments.
It isn’t the right choice for everyone. If you need medical detox, are at high risk of self-harm, or don’t have a safe, private place to join sessions, we’ll recommend in-person care or another level of treatment and help you find it. If you’re in crisis right now, call or text 988, or call 911.
Insurance Coverage for Virtual IOP and PHP
Many insurance plans cover telehealth at the same level as in-person treatment, but benefits differ from plan to plan. We’re in network with major carriers including Aetna, Cigna, Blue Shield of California, Kaiser, Tricare and UnitedHealthcare/Optum. We’ll run a free benefits check, usually the same day, and explain your costs before you start. Verify your insurance or explore financing.
Online Therapy FAQs
Is virtual IOP as effective as in-person treatment?
For many people, yes. Research on telehealth for depression, anxiety and substance use has found results comparable to in-person care for appropriate clients. What matters most is showing up consistently and engaging in the work, and for many, virtual care makes that easier. Your team will tell you honestly if in-person care would serve you better.
What do I need to join online sessions?
A computer, tablet or smartphone with a camera, a reliable internet connection and a private space where you can speak freely. Headphones help. Before your first day, our team will send you a secure link and help you test your setup so tech problems don’t get in the way.
Can I join virtual treatment if I don’t live near Thousand Oaks?
Yes, as long as you live in California. Our clinicians are licensed to treat California residents, so you can join from anywhere in the state. You’ll need to be physically located in California during your sessions.
Can I get medication prescribed through telehealth?
Often, yes. Our psychiatric providers can evaluate you, prescribe and manage many medications by telemedicine. Some medications have extra federal or state rules for remote prescribing, and your provider will explain any in-person requirements that apply to your treatment.
Ready to start from home? Call 805-905-5483, or check your coverage and we’ll get back to you, usually the same day.
