Behavioral Therapy

Behavioral therapy at Ventura Wellness Behavioral Health brings together three of the most widely studied approaches in mental health care, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and EMDR, in one outpatient program in Thousand Oaks. If anxiety, depression, trauma or substance use keeps pulling you back into the same patterns, these therapies give you practical tools to notice what is happening and respond differently. You can work on them in person at our Thousand Oaks clinic or online from anywhere in California.

If you are thinking about harming yourself or are in immediate danger, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911. We are an outpatient program, not an emergency service.

CBT, DBT and EMDR Therapy in Thousand Oaks

Each method works on a different part of the problem. CBT targets the link between thoughts, feelings and actions. DBT teaches skills for intense emotions and difficult relationships. EMDR helps the brain process traumatic memories that still feel raw years later. Your therapist decides with you which approach to lead with, and many clients use more than one over the course of treatment.

Behavioral therapies are built into every level of care we offer, from our partial hospitalization program to our intensive outpatient program. You work on them in individual therapy and practice them in skills groups, alongside people who understand what you are dealing with.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT starts from a simple idea: the way you interpret a situation shapes how you feel and what you do next. When those interpretations are harsh or distorted (“I always fail,” “Something terrible is about to happen”), they can keep anxiety, low mood or cravings going long after the original trigger has passed.

In CBT you learn to catch those thoughts, test them against the evidence and swap them for more balanced ones. You also change behavior directly, for example by gradually facing situations you have been avoiding or by planning activities that bring back energy and a sense of purpose. Sessions are structured and goal-oriented, and you usually leave with a short exercise to try before the next one.

CBT is a first-line treatment for anxiety and depression, and it adapts well to substance use. You map out high-risk situations, plan how to ride out cravings and rehearse what you will say when someone offers you a drink. Typical CBT work includes:

  • Spotting automatic thoughts and common thinking traps
  • Thought records and behavioral experiments
  • Gradual exposure for panic, phobias and avoidance
  • Relapse-prevention planning for alcohol and drug use

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT was developed for people whose emotions hit hard and fast, and who sometimes cope in ways that cause more pain later, such as self-harm, binge drinking or pushing people away. “Dialectical” refers to holding two truths at once: you are doing the best you can right now, and you can learn to do things differently.

DBT is taught as a set of concrete skills in four areas:

  • Mindfulness: staying present instead of being swept along by thoughts or urges
  • Distress tolerance: getting through a crisis moment without making it worse
  • Emotion regulation: understanding your emotions, lowering your vulnerability to them and changing the ones you can
  • Interpersonal effectiveness: asking for what you need and setting limits while keeping relationships intact

DBT is a strong fit for mood and personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder, for ongoing suicidal thoughts and for co-occurring disorders where emotional pain and substance use feed each other. Skills are taught in group and reinforced one-on-one with your therapist, so you get both practice and personal coaching.

EMDR Therapy for Trauma and PTSD

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured trauma therapy. Some memories stay stuck, so a smell, a sound or a tone of voice can bring the fear back as if the event were happening again. EMDR helps your brain reprocess those memories so they lose much of their emotional charge.

During reprocessing, you briefly hold a memory in mind while following bilateral stimulation, usually side-to-side eye movements, tapping or alternating tones. Before any of that, your therapist spends time preparing you, teaching grounding and calming techniques and making sure you feel steady enough to begin. You don’t have to describe every detail of what happened out loud.

EMDR is a recommended treatment for PTSD and is often part of care for complex trauma. The EMDR International Association offers more background on how the method works.

How Behavioral Therapies Fit Your Treatment Plan

Each client at Ventura Wellness Behavioral Health has a dedicated therapist, a case manager and a psychiatric team. Within your first three days, your therapist builds an individualized treatment plan with you, and the team reviews it every week. Behavioral therapy sits inside that plan alongside psychiatric care, including medication management when it helps.

A typical week might combine a CBT session on a specific worry, a DBT skills group and, once you are ready, EMDR. Some clients also work with acceptance and commitment therapy, which builds on the same foundation. Because we run morning, afternoon and evening tracks, you can keep up with work, school or family while you attend. Clients come to us from Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village and across Ventura County, and California residents can join through online therapy.

Behavioral Therapy FAQs

What is the difference between CBT and DBT?

CBT focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. DBT grew out of CBT but adds acceptance and mindfulness, and it puts more weight on managing intense emotions and relationships. People with anxiety or depression often start with CBT, while DBT tends to suit people whose emotions feel overwhelming or who struggle with self-harm. Many clients use parts of both.

Is EMDR safe if my trauma happened a long time ago?

Yes. EMDR is used for both recent and long-past trauma, including childhood experiences. Your therapist starts with preparation and stabilization, so you have grounding skills before you work on any memory. Some people feel tired or emotional after a session, which is normal, and your therapist will help you plan for that. You stay in control and can pause at any time.

Can behavioral therapy help with addiction?

Yes. CBT and DBT are both widely used in substance use treatment. They help you recognize triggers, manage cravings and handle stress without drinking or using. If you have both a mental health condition and a substance use problem, we treat them together. If you need medical detox first, we help coordinate a referral before you start outpatient care.

Can I do CBT, DBT or EMDR online?

Yes. CBT sessions and DBT skills groups work well by secure video, and California residents can attend our virtual PHP and IOP. EMDR can also be done online with the right setup, though some clients prefer to do trauma processing in person. Your therapist will talk through which format suits you best.

How quickly can I start?

Often within a day or two. After a short phone screening and a free insurance check, which usually comes back the same day, many clients begin the same day or the next. Our admissions team answers calls 24/7, so you can reach someone whenever you are ready to talk.
