Depression

Depression treatment in Thousand Oaks at Ventura Wellness Behavioral Health is for adults whose low mood, exhaustion or emptiness has stopped lifting on its own. We provide structured outpatient programs, in person and online, built around proven therapies and psychiatric care. Depression is treatable, and you can start getting help this week.

If you are thinking about suicide or are in immediate danger, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Ventura Wellness Behavioral Health is not an emergency service. Once you are safe, we’re here to help with ongoing treatment.

Depression Treatment in Thousand Oaks, CA

Depression is more than a bad week. It changes how you think, sleep, eat and see the future, and it can make ordinary tasks feel enormous. Our outpatient program gives you far more support than a weekly appointment while letting you live at home. Clients come to us from Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Simi Valley and across Ventura County, and our virtual option reaches California residents statewide.

From the start, you’ll have a dedicated therapist, a case manager and a psychiatric team. Your individualized treatment plan is in place within three days and reviewed weekly, and you’ll meet with a psychiatric provider in your first week. You don’t need a substance use diagnosis to join our mental health programs.

Signs of Depression

Depression looks different from person to person. Some people feel sad most of the time. Others mostly feel flat, irritable or tired. Common signs include:

  • Persistent sadness, hopelessness or emptiness
  • Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
  • Sleeping much more or much less than usual
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Low energy, slowed thinking or trouble concentrating
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

When several of these last for two weeks or longer and affect work, school or relationships, it’s time to talk to a professional. The National Institute of Mental Health offers a helpful summary of depression symptoms and risk factors.

Types of Depression We Treat

  • Major depressive disorder, including recurrent episodes
  • Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), a lower-grade depression that lasts years
  • Postpartum and perinatal depression
  • Seasonal patterns of depression
  • Depression with anxiety, trauma or substance use, treated together through our dual diagnosis approach

If your low periods alternate with times of unusually high energy or little need for sleep, we’ll assess for bipolar disorder. Learn more about our mood disorder treatment.

How We Treat Depression

There’s no single cure for depression, but a combination of therapy, skills, structure and, when it makes sense, medication helps most people feel better. Your plan may include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to break the cycle of harsh, hopeless thinking, plus behavioral activation to rebuild routines step by step
  • DBT skills for managing painful emotions and urges
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy to reconnect with your values when motivation is low
  • Psychodynamic therapy to explore patterns from the past that keep depression going

Individual therapy gives you focused time with your therapist, and group therapy counters the isolation depression thrives on. Our psychiatric team handles evaluation and ongoing medication management, adjusting the plan if side effects or slow progress get in the way. Yoga, breathwork and other wellness activities give you small, regular wins that add up.

Outpatient Depression Programs: PHP, IOP and Virtual

We offer morning, afternoon and evening schedules. Length of treatment depends on your progress, and your case manager sets up aftercare before you finish.

What to Expect in Your First Week

Your first day starts with an intake assessment and a chance to ask questions. Over the next few days you’ll meet your therapist, join your first groups and build your treatment plan together. Your psychiatric appointment happens within the first week. By the end of it, most people know their schedule, their care team and their first goals, even if those goals are as simple as getting up at the same time each morning. Small steps count.

Depression Treatment FAQs

Can depression be treated in an outpatient program?

Yes. Most people with depression are treated in outpatient settings. PHP and IOP add daily structure and several hours of therapy without an overnight stay. If you’re at immediate risk of harming yourself, a hospital or inpatient setting may be safer first, and our team can help you find that care.

Is virtual depression treatment available across California?

Yes. California residents can join our virtual PHP or IOP from home through secure video. You’ll have the same therapist, psychiatric team and group sessions as in-person clients, and you can switch to in-person care in Thousand Oaks if that works better for you later.

I’ve tried antidepressants before. Can you still help?

Yes. Many clients come to us after medication alone didn’t do enough. Our psychiatric providers review what you’ve tried and how it went, and therapy addresses the thinking and behavior patterns that medication can’t change. Combining the two is often more effective than either on its own.

Does insurance cover depression treatment?

Most insurance plans cover outpatient depression treatment. We’re in network with carriers such as Aetna, Cigna, Blue Shield of California, Kaiser, Tricare and UnitedHealthcare/Optum. Your out-of-pocket costs depend on your plan, so we offer a free benefits check, usually the same day.
