Resources for Families

Support for Parents, Partners and Friends

Practical guidance for anyone worried about a loved one's mental health or substance use, and for looking after yourself along the way.

When someone you love is struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma or addiction, it affects you too. Ventura Wellness Behavioral Health created this page for parents, partners, adult children and friends in Thousand Oaks and across Ventura County who want to help but aren't sure where to start. You don't have to have all the answers, and you don't have to handle it alone.

If your loved one is in immediate danger or talking about suicide, call or text 988 or call 911.

Starting the Conversation

  • Pick a calm, private moment when neither of you is rushed or upset
  • Describe specific things you've noticed instead of labels or diagnoses
  • Listen more than you talk, and expect that the first conversation may not go far
  • Offer one concrete next step, such as calling our admissions team together

Supporting Treatment Without Taking It Over

Once treatment starts, your role shifts from rescuer to supporter. Help with rides, schedules or childcare can make it easier to attend our intensive outpatient or partial hospitalization programs. With your loved one's written consent, you can also take part in family therapy sessions, in person or online. Without that consent, privacy laws mean we can't share details of their care, but we can always listen to you.

Looking After Yourself

Caregivers often put their own health last. Setting clear boundaries, keeping up your own routines and finding support for yourself all make you steadier for the person you're helping. The SAMHSA National Helpline offers free referrals any time, including for family members.
